Five die after Indian city receives worst single-spell rainfall in years
Five people have died of electrocution in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata after heavy rainfall triggered floods in many parts.
Vast swathes of the city are inundated, with water also entering people's homes in some neighbourhoods.
Public transport has been affected and some train services have been suspended indefinitely. Several schools have declared a holiday, while Kolkata's Mayor Firhad Hakim has asked people to stay indoors.
India's weather department has described the deluge as one of the city's heaviest single-spell rainfall in recent memory. The city is on alert for more rains due to a low-pressure area forming over the northeast Bay of Bengal, the weather department said.
