It's certainly been a windy day

Despite the warm weather we had over the weekend, it was certainly a windy start to the week.

Yellow weather warnings for wind - which is the least severe warning - have been put in place for Monday across Northern Ireland, Wales and much of England.

There was even a dusting of snow in some places, heavy hail showers and a suspected tornado in Staffordshire, where a parked caravan was flipped over, with nobody reported as being hurt.

What is causing the windy weather?

Speaking to Newsround, BBC weather presenter, Abbie Dewhurst said it's all because of low pressure, which means wetter, windier and colder conditions.

Explaining that there's currently low pressure heading over the North Sea, Abbie says that's why parts of the UK saw "very windy weather" on Monday.

Gusts of 50-60mph have been experienced, with some very heavy April showers which could have some hail and thunder mixed in.

Is this sort of weather normal?

Some parts of the country have seen damage due to very strong winds. In the village of Knutton in Staffordshire, a caravan was blown on its side, high winds damaged roofs and bins were scattered across streets. It was believed to have been caused by a fast moving weak tornado or squall - a sudden sharp increase in wind speeds lasting minutes and often accompanied by some heavy showers.

There were no reports of injuries and emergency services have been in the area to make sure buildings are safe.

Abbie explained "We probably see 80-90 of these per year and they are quite common in April but often found more rurally, whereas today they've been seen in pretty built up areas."

Despite the yellow weather warning in force today, the winds will calm down a little overnight with a quieter spell of weather to come at the end of the week.
