However, what really confuses me is why they would give the keyboard backlight and not add keycaps with translucent text. While there is light coming from beneath the caps, there is no light shining through the keys, illuminating the text on them. I had to swap keycaps from another keyboard I own to achieve that effect.
Also, this particular board appears to be designed for Apple computers and not PC as there is no "alt" key. I can probably reprogram this "option" key to alt somewhere in Windows but it's something to keep in mind.
Aside from easily solved inconvenience, I definitely recommend this keyboard.
I searched online and based on recommendations to troubleshoot, I replaced the cable (USB-C to USB) with multiple different ones but it does not work at all. I really got used to this clicky keyboard and was enjoying using it, too bad its not reliable enough to stand usage more than 3 months. I tried reaching out to the seller but I cannot find their email or phone on the amazon product page , so leaving a review here hoping that they will troubleshoot for me or send me a replacement.
I received a C1 Pro with brown switches and white backlight. The switches are mushy enough to be kind of like Cherry Browns, I guess ... I've gotten so spoiled over the years with Cherry Blue switches, so this is a definite step backwards (but admittedly quieter). As a programmer, I need to use the F1..F12 keys all the time, and therein lies the rub: The keyboard comes with the various media keys configured by default, and you have to press the awkwardly placed right-hand-pinky "fn" key to use layer that has the F1..F12 keys.
But no problem, you say: The keyboard comes with QMK/VIA support, right? So off I go to the VIA app on the web to change this, and ... the keyboard is not supported on the VIA app. So after an hour of browsing and reading Chinese and everything else, I download the necessary JSON file to configure the VIA app with. You have to turn on the secret config mode in VIA, then upload the JSON file and ... lots of errors. Read some more page, and find out that you have to enable backwards compatibility with V2 of the VIA app, so on the secret config page you flick that switch to support out-of-date config files, load the JSON file again, and ... lots of errors. Also, on the Mac (which this keyboard is made for), the Safari browser can't run the VIA app. And the Firefox browser can't run the VIA app. Fortunately, I have the stalkware Chrome installed, and it will run it. No luck. Same errors. OK, switch to a Windows Machine, since Edge supports the HID stuff as well, and this keyboard must certainly work on Windows, right? Wrong. Same errors again.
I'll update this review after the manufacturer gets back to me. The keyboard is well designed. The lighting is good. The colors look way better in person than in the photos. The layout is pretty useful. I am going to really like this thing once I get it working! So four stars for now, and I'll probably add one when they get me a fix for the VIA app.
Edit (24 Jun '23) - I'm about to spend another hour debugging their keyboard. The tech support is 99% useless (although polite and fairly prompt at replying, if you're awake during China hours). So far, they've had me create a video showing the problem (i.e. their JSON config file is broken so the ***ONLINE*** software doesn't work, not something unique to my keyboard or to my multiple computers and browsers that I've tested this on). Then they couldn't view the video because it was a standard video format, so add a 24 hour turn-around for me to do tech support for them and teach them how to convert a video, (which of course they didn't/couldn't do, so I converted it for them to an .mp4). So now they want me to update the keyboard firmware, even though it's a new keyboard and the firmware predates my purchase (although I acknowledge that they could have shipped me older firmware, so in theory this could work?) But the fundamental problem is that when I ask a question, THEIR SUPPORT TEAM DOES NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION AND INSTEAD SENDS ME ON A WILD GOOSE CHASE, as if my time were infinite and worth nothing. While the physical keyboard itself is fine, I'm dropping my review to 3 stars because the configuration software that I bought it for does not work. If the firmware update corrects it, I may consider upping my review, but I want to be clear: Keyboard good, software (currently) bad, tech support (really) bad.
Edit: (25 June '23) - On the plus side, the software mostly works after the firmware upgrade. The layout of the configurable keyboard is wrong in the software (around 4 keys are misconfigured, and it's quite obvious that they never tested this at all because it's painfully obvious from just looking at the screen), but by trial and error it's possible to figure out which ones the incorrectly mapped keys are, and alter the customization accordingly. Amazingly, macOS no longer supports the media keys on the Macbook Pro keyboard; hard to imagine how Apple could mess that up. At first, I thought that the Keychron keyboard media key bindings were bad, until I thought to verify that the built in Macbook Pro keyboard worked, and it didn't work either. Summary: Keyboard good, software is misconfigured a bit but now working, and the tech support is polite but really bad. 🤦♂️
Edit: Upping to 4 stars. I like the keyboard. It works well. Regarding the other review and the lack of an Alt key: There were extra Windows key caps included in my keyboard box for Windows, and a key-puller. Plus the keyboard has 4 layers programmed (2 for Mac, 2 for Windows) with a physical switch on the keyboard to switch between these two.
