Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales Report

The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the fourth quarter of 2023, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $285.2 billion, an increase of 0.8 percent (±1.1%)* from the third quarter of 2023. Total retail sales for the fourth quarter of 2023 were estimated at $1,831.4 billion, an increase of 0.4 percent (±0.4%)* from the third quarter of 2023. The fourth quarter 2023 e-commerce estimate increased 7.5 percent (±1.2%) from the fourth quarter of 2022 while total retail sales increased 2.8 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the fourth quarter of 2023 accounted for 15.6 percent of total sales.

On a not adjusted basis, the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the fourth quarter of 2023 totaled $324.8 billion, an increase of 19.5 percent (±1.1%) from the third quarter of 2023. The fourth quarter 2023 e-commerce estimate increased 7.2 percent (±1.2%) from the fourth quarter of 2022 while total retail sales increased 2.4 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the fourth quarter of 2023 accounted for 17.1 percent of total sales.

Total e-commerce sales for 2023 were estimated at $1,118.7 billion, an increase of 7.6 percent (±1.2%) from 2022. Total retail sales in 2023 increased 2.1 percent (±0.4%) from 2022. E-commerce sales in 2023 accounted for 15.4 percent of total sales. E-commerce sales in 2022 accounted for 14.7 percent of total sales.
