Kaitrin Snodgrass, a storyboard artist for the Netflix animated movie My Little Pony: A New Generation, has declared a meme connecting the new film to the ironic "MordeTwi" ship to be "canon."

"MordeTwi" refers to the pairing of Mordecai from Regular Show and Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The crossover ship developed a minor following online in 2011 but has only recently become a widespread meme due to TikTok recircling a 2012 illustration by DeviantArt user bluedog444 depicting crudely drawn versions of Mordecai and Twilight Sparkle singing the chorus from the song "Airplanes" by B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore ("Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now."). Redraws and remixes of this piece of fanart have boomed in popularity over the past year.

The meme Snodgrass declared canon is an image posted by Twitter user @BerrySoda10, implying that My Little Pony: A New Generation's Izzy Moonbow is the offspring of Mordecai and Twilight Sparkle. Izzy Moonbow, voiced by Kimiko Glenn (no stranger to voicing animated horses for Netflix, having recently starred in Centaurworld), is a unicorn with purple fur like Twilight Sparkle but whose blue mane is the same color as Mordecai the blue jay. @BerrySoda10 shared the image with the caption "can you unsee it?" to which Snodgrass replied, "This is canon."

Obviously, this is all in jest, joking along with the ironic popularity of this impossible pairing. Snodgrass does not have writing, directing or producing credits on My Little Pony: A New Generation, so even if she was being dead-serious in this declaration, this probably wouldn't count as official "word of God" confirmation that this design was ever intended to connect with MordeTwi. My Little Pony: A New Generation was announced as in development in February 2019, over a year before TikTok brought the ship to the mainstream.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, the cartoon based on the fourth generation of My Little Pony toys, ran for nine seasons and developed an unexpected adult following. My Little Pony: A New Generation is a sequel to Friendship is Magic, but is focused on brand new characters and is the launch of the franchise's fifth generation.

Arriving on Netflix Sept. 24, My Little Pony: A New Generation features Vanessa Hudgens as Sunny Starscout, Kimiko Glenn as Izzy Moonbow, James Marsden as Hitch Trailblazer, Ken Jeong as Sprout and Phil LaMarr as Alphabittle. The film is directed by Robert Cullen and Jose Ucha from a screenplay by Gillian Berrow and Tim Sullivan.
