Facebook gives the News Feed a makeover, users get angry

Facebook

The Facebook News Feed now adjusts to show you top and most recent posts based on when and how frequently you're checking the Social Network. There is now also a real-time "ticker" that shows you what's happening right this second.

When I logged on to Facebook this morning, I saw several variations of "Yo, dawg! We heard you like Facebook, so we put Facebook in the upper right corner of your Facebook so you can Facebook while you Facebook." posted by my friends. I chuckled. And then I wanted to weep — because this silly joke could not have been a more accurate description of what I was seeing.

(For those unfamiliar with the "Yo, dawg..." meme, it got its start with MTV's "Pimp My Ride" — a TV show in which cars in poor condition were given custom makeovers. At the end of several episodes, one of the hosts — rapper Xzibit — turned to the owners of the vehicles and muttered a recursive statement along the lines of “We heard you like TV, so we put a TV in your car so you can watch TV while you drive." It didn't take long for Internet commenters to start mimicking the phrasing in macro images.)

The reason my friends were making these jokes is because Facebook decided to give the News Feed a makeover in an attempt to make sure that you're always seeing the posts most relevant to you:

Now, News Feed will act more like your own personal newspaper. You won't have to worry about missing important stuff. All your news will be in a single stream with the most interesting stories featured at the top. If you haven't visited Facebook for a while, the first things you'll see are top photos and statuses posted while you've been away. They're marked with an easy-to-spot blue corner.

Facebook

This change means that — chronological order be darned! — posts which are determined to be "top stories" by Facebook will show up first in your News Feed, followed by the "most recent" links. Additionally, a new real-time "ticker" in the upper right corner of the homepage will keep you posted on things by showing updates, comments, shares, and so on instantly.

Facebook

Does that sound like information overload?

Based on a quick glance through my friends' posts and at Twitter, many users think so.

Despite the folks at Facebook explaining that they have our best intentions in mind, users don't appear happy about the convoluted new homepage — nor the fact that Facebook is controlling what they're seeing more than they'd like.

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much we can do about this latest News Feed makeover (though switching the language option to UK English or Pirate did temporarily bring back the old News Feed for some people), but — for whatever it's worth — Facebook does offer some suggestions on making it slightly tolerable:

If you have a wider screen, slide the grey bar between ticker and chat up or down to adjust how many updates you see at a time. To control who can see your updates anywhere on Facebook, including in ticker and News Feed, adjust your sharing control or apps settings.

FB, in its wisdom, has decided that a woman I have never exchanged a word with is my top story, while my daughter has disappeared completely despite being listed as family. Apparently, to be top, all you have to do is have a bunch of unemployed friends who hang out on FB all day and make lots of comments.

I am so sick of people who complain. We have revolutionized social networking. You need to show appreciation and far less negative input. We decide whats best. We decide what direction this goes. We decide what partners to include. And remember, we decide who to keep and who to break up with.

Piss off, Anthony. You are no more important than my circle of friends who build the software you use to try and dictate what we see on Facebook and who build the code in which you claim supreme dictatorship over. Remember programmers use back doors in their code, really, and of course, I'm sure Facebook will pay them $500 to show them how they brought you down. Know your place, you little peon. That is, of course, if you actually work for Facebook, which I seriously doubt you do. You really couldn't be THAT STUPID, since it is incredibly EASY to track you down from your posts. lol

I WAS a facebook user who spent real $$ on this stupid crap, and I used to advertise with Facebook. When asked why I am deleting my Facebook, I will refer them to this link in addition to telling them their new layout is crap. I'm already on Google +, and will point and laugh while Facebook follows My Space into the history of failed social networks sites.

Now I get it, did you help create the anger and frustration being shown by just about all fb users? Or, are you just here trying to get attention?

One thing I discovered early on about FB: just about anyone on Planet Earth who is a realtor (and what the heck are they actually "selling" nowadays - short sales?), has their profile out there for anyone to view. They also have over 500+ "friends." It's called marketing and realtors are desperate for customers these days. I also have several friends who practically live on the site and post every little detail of their boring daily routine: "decided to have a vegan dinner last night; here's the recipe for lentil stew." Yeah, I was holding my breath for that tidbit. Sorry, but I don't find Facebook particularly interesting. Great for posting photos for friends and family if you aren't in contact that often, but maybe I'm just too old. I see people on there who are practically addicted to it. To each his own, I don't care what new concepts they put on there. For those of you who enjoy using it - great.

Could you make sure my account is COMPLETELY deleted? Do you need my social security number, home address, and bank account numbers to make sure the deletion is complete? Just tell me what you need and I'll provide it for you. No worries here about identity theft or misuse of my private information by a souless, heartless collection gatherer masquerading as a social network. Yup, no worries at all.

Wow, Anthony. You work for FB, yet are on here insulting the users?? Don't know a damn thing about customer service, do you? If I'm treated like crap somewhere, I'll shop somewhere else. FB won't rule the world forever; something better will come along and take over. Are you not reading what's happening to Netflix?? Don't think it can happen to you?? Ah, the ignorance of superiority never ceases to amaze me! And if I were your employer, I'd think twice about letting you back in the building.

We are in a position where customer service is of little merit. It a great job to have. I mean what choice do you have? We own the market. Its not like Walmart where you just go to the next store.

You work for Facebook ANTHONY? Doesn't really surprise me, with the way you are treating those who don't like or want the new app. By the way, when you act like a whiny corporate shill, it doesn't do much for the cause you are pushing. Listening to what the people want goes a long way, instead of telling them to live with what corporate allows them to have. Why make more enemies than friends?

After that child like response, I am going to do like one of the other posters, and take screen shots of your comments to those who use Facebook, and sent them around to my friends who use Facebook. Googles reputation may not be the greatest, but at least their employees don't come into these forums, and treat their customers like crap and making their company look like total dirt-bag morons. And I suggest, anyone reading this do the same thing. Take screenshots and let the rest of the Facebook users know what the Facebook corporate employees think of them. This way, corporate can thank it's employees like ANTHONY here for it's downward spiral. Way to go ANTHONY, and thank you for showing us your corporations true face.

The idea of product improvement is supposed to be to solve a problem, not create one where it did not previously exist. It has started to feel like people at Facebook, and other platforms, feel they have to justify their existence (and employment) by making changes where they are not needed.

Please, Please, PLEASE!!! Put it back the way it use to be. I don't like the ticker, and my page just repeats itself. The ticker drives me crazy, and luckily for me with the price of gas, that is just a short drive.
