I bought this as a gift for my 2-year old niece, who has shown a lot of interest in learning to write (but is obviously still a little young to have much success with it). She really enjoys playing with this and raising the metal balls, although she will need to get a bit older before she can use this to its full potential. I was happy to find a unique gift that she didn't already have!
As some of the other reviewers noted, some of the metal balls can get "stuck" when they are raised, but I think this is intentional so that the balls don't fall back down if a child is drawing but also moving the pad around a lot. Plus, as an adult, it's actually fun and soothing to pop the metal balls back down (it sort of reminds me of the sensation of popping bubble wrap).

The Original Magnatab was designed with the Montessori learning style in mind, creating a sensory-based creative play experience. Using the magnetic stylus, children pull the beads up to the surface to draw pictures, letters, numbers and shapes. In doing this, they feel the pull of the magnets, hear their clicking sound, and see what they are drawing. The beads are magically “erased” when pushed down by the tip of a finger or the swipe of the side of the stylus. Kids love it
My son was gifted this for his Birthday (5 years old). My daughter (2 years old) also loves it. I had to purchase a second one because they both wanted to use it.Once in awhile a magnetic ball doesn't come up when they are tracing but that doesn't seem to bother the kids at all. The magnetic balls do push down really easily. When we first pulled it out of the package many of the balls were stuck and it took some force to push down so I was worried about thay would be a problem with the kids but i haven't had the issue since.The only thing that I dislike about this is that the pen is not attached to the tablet with any sort of string/elastic. If the pen gets lost then the board will become useless.
