NCIS: Hawai’i team leader Vanessa Lachey has shared her deeper thoughts on the CBS drama’s cancellation after just three seasons.
Lachey, as Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant of the Pearl Harbor office, made history when the well-watched franchise’s third spinoff debuted in September 2021, playing the first female team leader.
“Gutted, confused, blindsided,” Lachey offered soon after the cancellation news hit, via Instagram Story. “Grateful, confident, beloved fans.”
“Processing this news and still being present with my family,” added the mom of three, and wife of Nick Lachey. “I love you all! Maholo Nui Loa.”
Update: On May 1, having more fully processed the news, Lachey shared on Instagram a serene video of her seated by the ocean, at the same spot she filmed a scene in the pilot. “As I sat here today, knowing our show is over, I turned to [the ocean] again [asking] what do we do now,” she wrote. “She answered with ease. Just as the air hits the water & the water hits the land, the waves connect to the shore, some with a huge impact, then… it goes back out. You see… we aren’t meant to be here forever, we are on borrowed time. We appreciate what was given to us for our use, we nurture it and then we leave it better for the next dreamer.”
Lachey gave props to the show’s cast and crew, adding, “I wish we had more time, I’m sorry we don’t. I wish we had a proper good-bye, I’m sorry we didn’t. I know we ALL are connected deeper than any TV show.”
Part 2 of what will now be NCIS: Hawai’i’s series finale — filmed almost a month ago — airs Monday at 10/9c, on CBS.
Lachey’s co-star Noah Mills, who plays Jesse Boone on the CBS procedural, reacted, “It was soooo much damn fun while it lasted!” via an Instagram story. “I will miss so many and so much about making this show. Incredibly grateful for the memories and to the AMAZING people on the great island of Oahu Hawaii, I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to visit, live, play, work and grow in such a special place.”
Two of NCIS: Hawai’i‘s three creators weighed in on Friday evening, not long after the bad news broke.
“Four years ago, [Jan Nash], [Matt Bosack] and I started something very special. We joined with an incredible cast, amazing writers and crew… and gathered in Hawai’i to make a show,” wrote EP Chris Silber. “But ended up creating an ohana. I’m so grateful to you all.”
Co-creator Matt Bosack added: “[NCIS: Hawaii] was a dream. And while it’s ended, I am forever grateful to my partners, [Christopher Silber] and [Jan Nash], our amazing cast, led by [Vanessa Lachey], the entire crew, and this wonderful island I call home. I’m proud of the stories we were able to tell over these 3 seasons. To tell fun Navy crime mysteries but also dig into ideas about family, life, love, identity… To all the fans, especially those who saw themselves in these characters, mahalo nui loa. A hui hou.”
Cast members Tori Anderson and Jason Antoon, who play Kate and Ernie, also reacted to the cancellation.
There is no information regarding NCIS: Hawai’i being shopped elsewhere, TVLine hears.
Season-to-date, NCIS: Hawai’i is averaging 7.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating (with Live+7 playback data), up 4% in viewers vs. Season 2 but down a tick in the demo. Out of the 14 drama series that CBS has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 6 in total audience (behind Tracker, NCIS, FBI, Blue Bloods and The Equalizer) and eighth in the demo.
In the wake of the island drama’s end, the NCIS franchise will continue to expand via the “Young Gibbs” prequel NCIS: Origins, which has claimed a spot on CBS’ 2024-25 schedule, and a Tony/Ziva-centric offshoot that is bound for Paramount+.
So sad about two of my favorite shows being cancelled!
NCIS Hawaii stories were interesting and relatable!
So Help Me Todd gave me the laugh I needed in thes trying times!
After the failure of the spin off of young sheldon, you can bring back NCIS Hawaii , it deserved at least 8 seasons. I blame the strike for the shows demise along with CSI Vegas both excellent shows that should have stayed
I’m going to miss seeing the handsome Noah Mills. He sure fills out a pair of khakis nicely.
TYTYTY NOT CBS FOR CANCELLING ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS. IT’S JUST AMAZING I STILL HAVE A HEART LEFT.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS ACTION.NCIS HAWAII IS A GREAT SHOW WITH GREAT ACTORS AND ACTRESSES AND GREAT PREMISES.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON’T DO THIS TO US!
I think it is BS that this show is being canceled 😞 CBS you are really starting to s**k. You keep ending the good shows such as Blue Bloods, So Help Me Todd and East New York. You need to cancel Elsbeth and forget about the NCIS: Orgins. I am starting to hate CBS.
There is no intelligent reason for this cancellation when they are keeping crap shows. Who decides? Obviously not anyone with a working brain cell
Can’t believe they have cancelled NCIS Hawaii and renewed NCIS Sydney! No comparison in shows quality talent and story lines. Very poor decision making on someone’s part.
All of the shows I watch CBS is canceling!because they have no Room’ they say? So Atm CBS is NOT my favorite TV station and several actors on favorite shows are calling it quits. So why would CBS be a favorite? Extremely disappointed in CBS’s decisions. CBS you have lost a fan of many years.
Really poor on CBS part but the head doesn’t like keeping good shows. She wants to bring back cheap stuff. Will get CBS time to switch to another network
Loved that show they seem to be canceling all of our best shows like blood bloods swat now ncis hawaii to put what on another stupid reality-based show
Her acting was fine, but Jane should’ve been written better.
Hopefully she gets a nice job at Hallmark or Lifetime as a side gig
I won’t watch young Gibbs. Prequels are stupid.
NCIS Hawaii became my favorite NCIS. Dumb to cancel it. I looked forward to it each week.
CBS…. shame on you for canceling.
I’m so tired of tv networks cancelling the best shows! Its aggravating! Makes me not want to watch their other shows. Just stupid!!!
I’m furious with the networks for canceling programs that depict WOMEN in positive, leadership roles. Last season ABC canceled, BIG SKY and ALASKA DAILY. Now, CBS has canceled, NCIS HAWAII, SO HELP ME TODD and CSI VEGAS. Again, shows that reflect WOMEN in positive leadership roles. It seems very apparent that the Networks moral compass is in need of repair. Network shows that feature, bed-hopping, profanity and outright stupidity seem to have it made. As a parent I could with confidence recommend my daughter watch all of the shows previously highlighted. The coined expression, SEE HER, BE HER should mean something positive in the landscape of television programming. Way too many shows portray WOMEN as vapid, catty and materialistic. Please, Networks secure for our daughters and sons a positive platform for WOMEN!!!! Thank goodness ROBYN/THE EQUALIZER was saved!
Why would I bother watching anymore NCIS shows. Fans don’t count. Origins, T and D. No thanks
I can’t believe the show is being canceled. One of my favorite shows to watch. So sad. I wish yall would not end NCIS Hawaii
I am a huge fan of all ncis shows since the beginning. Being a veteran I thought having a female lead was overdue and finally cbs had one was great and being in Hawaii was even better. The plots were were designed to hold the audience attention and they succeeded. There was always plenty of action, and the family element was very good. Considering some of the shows cbs is keeping I will not be Happy and I will not be watching. CBS should reconsider this decision and choose another less popular show to cancel.
Loved the show hate that CBS did something so stupid cancelling it.
First New Orleans, then Los Angeles, and now Hawaii ??? All my favorite shows. What a great loss. CBS you are the worst. Time to find another network. Who cares about a young Gibbs, and Sydney has no chemistry.
Very disappointed. Great program that needs to continue!! CBS made a wrong choice to cancel…
Can CBS get any more stupid?? NCIS:Hawaii, Blue Bloods and so many other shows cancelled only to keep shows like survivor! this make me sick!
CBS suck’s canceling good shows like NCIS Hawaii and leaving crap shows on will not watch this station again
We enjoyed the show very much and our thoughts are the show should have been able to do season 4. Even if only part of a season to have a proper ending as lots of fans and showed it doing well in it’s time slot. Maybe could have went to Paramount Plus. Thank you.
WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? CANCELING ONE OF THE BEST SERIES ON TV????????????????? I’M APPALED AT THIS. MOST OF THE NEW SHOWS THAT ARE BEING PRESENTED AREN’T EVEN INTERESTING. AT LEAST NCIS AND NCIS HAWAII ARE INTERESTING AND THE CAST OF BOTH SIDES ARE AMAZING. I DONT KNOW IF I CAN WATCH EITHER ANYMORE. SHAME ON YOU!
