Google’s App Spotlight feature to re-engage users with their installed apps: Here’s how it will work
Google announced a new feature for Android 15 at its recent I/O developer conference. Dubbed "App Spotlight," this feature aims to drive user engagement by showcasing the best content within already-installed apps.
As reported by TechCrunch, App Spotlight integrates seamlessly within the Android launcher. It automatically curates a personalised carousel of content based on a user's installed apps. This carousel could showcase anything from a news article from a news app to a product recommendation from a shopping app.
With a simple tap, users can jump straight from the App Spotlight carousel into the specific section of the app featuring the highlighted content. This eliminates the need for users to navigate through the app itself, offering a smooth and efficient way to access engaging features.
Google has already secured partnerships with over 35 major developers for App Spotlight, including Spotify, Pinterest, Tumblr, TikTok, and Shopify.
Google also assures users that the content curation process will prioritise user privacy and will not involve collecting any additional personal data beyond what's already permitted within installed apps. Additionally, users will have control over the feature, with the ability to disable App Spotlight entirely if they prefer a more traditional app launcher experience.
By prioritising content discovery within existing apps, Google aims to create a more dynamic and user-centric Android experience.
